my guys are gifted

i can always count on the guys who live in my house to…

… be excellent eye rollers and huffers
… offer me non-committal, mono-syllabic answers to my questions
…  have mad skills in knowing how to dodge committing to plans, holding out until they figure out what the best option is
…  demonstrate an unfathomable amount of resilience against the crappy hands this life deals them
…  come through with a new surprise right at the perfect time i think i’ve got them figured out

i was introduced to this book when i attended the behold the lamb concert last year.  andrew peterson read this excerpt and i was immediately interested.  i asked my friend amy about the book, she sent it to me.  i’m hooked.  sure, it’s a kids bible, but i’m loving the language, the wording, and the telling of the story in a fresh new way.

THE JESUS STORYBOOK BIBLE: EVERY STORY WHISPERS HIS NAME

tells the Story beneath all the stories in the Bible. From Noah to Moses to the great King David, every story points to a Child, every story whispers his name…

“It’s like an adventure story about a young Hero who came from a far country to win back his lost treasure. It’s a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne, everything to rescue the one he loves. It’s like the most wonderful of fairy tales that have come true in real life.

You see, the best thing about this story is—it’s true.

It takes the whole Bible to tell this story. And at the center of the Story there is a baby. Every story in the Bible whispers his name. He is like the missing piece in a  puzzle—the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together and suddenly you can see a beautiful picture.

And this is no ordinary baby. This is the Child upon whom everything would depend. This is the baby that would one day—but wait, our story starts where all good stories start. Right at the very beginning…”

good plumbing

The society which scorns excellence in plumbing because plumbing is a humble activity, and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because philosophy is an exalted activity, will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.

that orphan verse

religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.  james 1:27

for years i’ve been convicted by this verse, sometimes i feel plagued by it.  sometimes i feel honored by it.  it’s a calling.  it’s a challenge.  i’ve always loved how this verse defines religion without sounding religious.

typically james 1:27 gets labeled as that verse about the orphans.  how restrictive.

1.  orphans AND widows.  it’s not either/or.  finding a healthy balance is tough.
2.  keeping oneself from being polluted by the world.  that’s the near invisible dangler of the verse.

i want to care for orphans.
i want to care for widows.
i want to keep myself unpolluted.
